IN THE GALE
Completed project. Prequel to WHAT KEEPS THE STARS APART
At seventeen, Emily has dedicated most of her life to playing the role of caretaker to her mother—a drug-addicted high school dropout. But when she discovers she's pregnant, her priorities change. Determined to escape the abject poverty and addiction surrounding her small world in the decrepit trailer park, Emily commits to graduating high school for her unborn baby.
With her mother's boyfriend, Ray, supplying food and funds, Emily can focus for the first time on school and preparing for motherhood. It all comes with a price, though, as Ray ropes Emily into dealing drugs with him. He proposes the two form a long-term partnership and promises the venture will allow her to provide her child with a life he/she could only imagine.
After Ray assaults her mother, Emily realizes neither she nor her baby is safe. The only thing keeping her from sneaking away is the innate need to protect her mother. With no money, resources, or support, and a mother too terrified to leave, Emily feels trapped. She must choose whether to sever ties with her mother or risk getting caught dealing and losing custody of her child.

Hockey mom extraordinaire, Marilynn Daniels, lives life in an ice-cold rink. If she’s not losing her voice cheering on her bound-to-go pro sons, she’s flitting around behind the scenes, sneaking snacks in their bags or organizing other moms in a brigade to make homemade locker signs. But an ovarian cancer diagnosis threatens to tear apart the one thing she values most: family. Marilynn puts on her game face when she takes on an invasive surgery and harsh chemotherapy treatments during the long cold hockey season. Afraid she won’t live past the state tournament, Marilynn focuses on writing letters to her sons as a playbook for their lives. Like any good mom, she wants to make sure they’re covered if cancer steals her away.
On the ice, sixteen-year-old Nathan Daniels isn’t afraid of a thing. Definitely not slamming other players into the boards when they run their mouths. Hell, he’s already being scouted by Saint Paul State University—his dream college. But off the ice, Nathan is petrified. Not only of girls but also of losing his number one fan—his mom, to cancer. Fearful it will be the last season she’ll be around for, Nathan’s determined to guide his team to the first state championship the team's had in ten years.
